Taking on the directorial reigns from JJ Abrams, Fast & Furious 6 director Justin Lin talked with Deadline about Star Trek 3. On the subject of the script co-written by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung, Lin remained tight lipped, giving no real details about the upcoming Trek movie.
But, what he did reveal is, firstly that that Simon Pegg will not be in every scene (something some of you might expect since he’s co-writing the movie).
He also revealed that he plans to bring a lot of "new and fresh" material to the franchise. Even teasing new species. Promising that the plot will not be borrowed from classic Trek episodes the way Star Trek Into Darkness was.
"It’s all new and fresh. The Klingons, Romulans and other species are great, but it’s time to go further. It has been fun to focus on creating whole new worlds and species."
Lin also spoke about his admiration for JJ Abrams' work, but said his take on the franchise will differ from earlier films in a couple ways.
"As great as JJ’s films were, there’s still a lot to be mined from these characters. They haven’t really gone on their five-year mission, so what we experienced in the TV show hasn’t been touched on yet. That sets up an opportunity for exploration and the deeper you go, the more you are examining humanity. Those are the things that I absorbed as a kid and hope to tap into and embrace and celebrate. By the time this movie comes out, Star Trek will have been around for 50 years."
