Marvel and Sony have struck an agreement that will bring Spider-Man into the Marvel cinematic universe. Many details were left out of the announcement.
The announcement states, "The new Spider-Man will first appear in a Marvel film from Marvel's Cinematic Universe," but it doesn't say which film. This is where The Wall Street Journal has stepped in with a new report confirming a Spidey appearance in Captain America 3:
The two companies said late Monday that Spider-Man will appear in an upcoming Disney-produced Marvel super-heroes movie; that movie is 2016’s “Captain America: Civil War,” according to a person with knowledge of the matter.
We also know that the next solo Spider-Man film, which is being co-produced by Marvel and Sony Pictures, will arrive in 2017. The Wall Street Journal also claims that Andrew Garfield is out, as there will be "a new version of the web-slinger."
And according to The Daily Beast, Andrew Garfield did have discussions about staying on as the character, but ultimately "it didn't make sense" to do so because Marvel are looking for a younger, high school age Spidey.
Was it actually Garfield's decision not to reprise the role? That's how it's being spun by certain other outlets, but there's no real indication of that in the original report. Plus, it's hard to imagine Garfield passing up the opportunity to play Spider-Man again alongside Marvel's team of Avengers.
And what does this new deal mean for The Sinister Six movie Drew Goddard ("Cabin In The Woods") has been working on for over a year?
Sony will delay its planned release of “The Sinister Six,” about a group of Spider-Man villains, in wake of the new deal said a person involved in movie. It had been scheduled for release in November of 2016. - WSJ
This is disappointing news for fans of Garfield, myself included. Garfield played Peter Parker with the right notes of intensity and awkwardness, a genius who lacked all social graces. And he just acted the role of Spider Man perfectly.
In my opinion the films where GREAT though the first was better than the second. But it just needed a few tweaks, it had nothing to do with the acting of any of the characters. Though i do really wish that they hadn't killed of Gwen.
Though if the reports are true then i do hope that they recast Spidey as Miles Morales he would change up the story line, which is well needed if they are rebooting it. Instead of Ben Parker dies and Peter finds out is responsibility to save people. Which at first it was fine having too reboots with the story line, but come on not a third!!
