When Jodie Whittaker (Broadchurch) takes over the Sonic Screwdriver from Peter Capaldi to become the 13th Doctor in the upcoming Doctor Who Christmas special, the Time Lord/Lady will be joined by no less than three companions for a new series of timey wimey adventures.
BBC America has announced that Bradley Walsh (Coronation Street, Law & Order: UK), Tosin Cole (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and Mandip Gill (Hollyoaks, The Good Karma Hospital) will materialize inside the TARDIS as new series regular for Season 8. Walsh has come on board as Graham; Cole will play the role of Ryan; and Gill will co-star as Yasmin. Holby City alum Sharon D. Clarke has also joined the cast in a recurring role. No word yet on the character Clarke will play.
From the press release, it would appear that the Doctor will be getting three regular (and seemingly human once again) traveling companions in the TARDIS; something that hasn’t been seen since Doctor Who returned to TV in 2006 thanks to then-showrunner Russell T Davies. And no, I’m not counting the Season 4 two-parter “The Stolen Earth” and “Journey’s End,” which featured a bunch of current and former companions in the shape of Donna, Rose, Martha, Captain Jack, Mickey and Sarah Jane. Matt Smith's Eleven had two companions in the TARDIS: Amy and Rory.
"The new Doctor is going to need new friends. We’re thrilled to welcome Mandip, Tosin and Bradley to the Doctor Who family," new showrunner Chris Chibnall said. "They’re three of Britain’s brightest talents and we can’t wait to see them dive into brand new adventures with Jodie’s Doctor. Alongside them, we’re delighted that Sharon D. Clarke is also joining the show."
Along with casting the first woman in the role of the Doctor, Chibnall will be shaking things up even more when Season 8 launches in the Fall 2018. Instead of the regular 13 episode season, the series will feature ten 50-minute installments, kicking off with a one-hour episode.
What do you think of Jodie Whittaker’s 13th Doctor being joined by a trio of new pals? Let’s cross our fingers the TARDIS has more than one bathroom in there.
